The centenary commemoration of the Easter Rising 1916 is being marked in a number of ways in our school during the academic year 2015/16.
Presentation of Irish Flag
On 21st September Corporal Denise Doyle and Sergeant Eddie O'Neill presented us with a tricolour which we will be proud to hang outside the school for Proclamation Day. Rishona, Grace and Niamh (6th class) read from the proclamation. The girls were very interested in hearing all about army life, and Denise and Eddie were very generous with their time. Padraig Dowling has kindly donated two flagpoles to us, one of which we will use to display the Irish flag.
Visit to The Curragh Military Museum
Arising from the interest the girls showed in the army and the history of the military in Ireland during the flag presentation, we decided to arrange a visit to the Military Museum in The Curragh for the senior girls. This took place on Novermber 4th. The museum contains a wide range of displays, including a gun room with an array of guns, a display of military tanks, and documents and photographs relating to many interesting times in The Curragh's past, including its use as an internment camp during both World Wars. The highlight for many was probably getting to see the 'Sliabh na mBan' - the armoured car that was part of Michael Collins' convoy at Beal na mBláth.
Proclamation Day 15th March 2016
We had a lovely afternoon in school on the 15th March. We commemorated the events of Easter 1916 and raised our National Flag at the front of the school. Thank you to staff, students, parents and visitors to the school who helped to make this afternoon a memorable one. Once again thanks to the Parents' Council for providing drinks and treats for the parents and children.
Commemoration 1916
Children in 3rd and 4th classes visited the library last Friday as Michael Moylan facilitated a history workshop.
